Everyone wants a bright, white smile, but not a lot of people do much of their own research as they try to achieve it. After all, there are all kinds of over-the-counter teeth whitening products—some more effective or safer than others—and it can be overwhelming to weigh every option that’s out there, considering the sheer number of them. The best thing to do, however, is to consult a dentist instead of trying methods that might be ineffective or even harmful.
Here are a few things your dentist wants you to know about teeth whitening:
- Baking soda isn’t very effective. Baking soda isn’t as abrasive for your teeth as many people make it out to be, but it’s still not the best way to whiten your teeth. Instead of brushing your teeth with baking soda, it would be more effective to use a toothpaste with fluoride.
- There are two ways to whiten teeth. A lot of people turn to products that contain gentle abrasives, which help remove external surface stains, but only peroxide can bleach the internal color of your teeth.
- You should consult your dentist if you are interested in teeth whitening. The most effective teeth whitening treatment is going to be one provided by your dentist, but there are other reasons beyond this for why you should consult your dentist before whitening your teeth. For instance, it’s not safe for everyone. If you are pregnant, have crowns or veneers, or have untreated dental products, you should avoid teeth whitening products.
