Dental crowns are necessary when you have a cavity that is large enough to destabilize your tooth, when you have had a root canal, or if you have cracked or chipped a tooth beyond the point of repair. Crowns are made to cover your teeth, stabilizing and protecting the damaged tooth. Without crowns, the damaged teeth would most likely need to be extracted instead.
If you have recently been informed that you need dental crowns, you may be feeling nervous about the upcoming procedure. In this blog, we’ll strive to put your mind at ease and tell you a bit more about the process so that you’ll know what to expect during your next dental visit.
Dental crowns are typically made from porcelain, ceramic, or metal. In most dental offices, dentists rely on an outsourced lab to create custom crowns for each patient, which means that two appointments are required to complete the dental procedure. The first appointment involves properly preparing the mouth and taking impressions of the damaged tooth. Once these impressions are created, they’ll be sent to the lab to create a custom crown in the patient’s desired material. When the completed crown is returned to the dental office, the patient will need to come back to have the crown permanently placed.
However, at Dental Oasis of Clayton, we have a CEREC machine in the office, which allows us to make and seat crowns on the same day. With same-day procedures for preparing, creating, and seating crowns, you can have your teeth stabilized and looking great again as soon as possible. Be sure to discuss with our dentists any concerns you may have. We will teach you how to care for your new crowns and keep your teeth in excellent condition.
