In this article, we will focus on dental crowns, providing an overview of what they are and how they work.
- What are dental crowns? – A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over a damaged tooth to restore it to its original size, shape, appearance, and most importantly, strength. A full crown covers the whole surface of the tooth visible above the gum line. In some cases, only a partial crown, which covers only a portion of the tooth, may be necessary to protect the rest of the tooth from damage.
- When are dental crowns necessary? – Dental crowns can be used in a variety of circumstances. As we alluded to above, for instance, they can be used to protect a weak or damaged tooth from further harm. They can also be used to help hold a dental bridge in place, or to cover a dental implant. Crowns can also be used purely cosmetically to improve the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth.
- How are dental crowns applied? – The process for installing a dental crown is much like that of installing a filling. First, the dentist will remove some of the natural tooth material to get rid of any decayed tissue and create a surface for the crown to adhere to. Then, a resin is applied to both the crown and the tooth, and the crown is set in place. Finally, a UV light is used to cure the resin and bond the crown to the natural tooth.
