A dental abscess is a pocket of infection caused by bacteria. It can develop inside the tooth or in the surrounding gums and bone.
Symptoms may include severe tooth pain, swelling, a bad taste in your mouth, sensitivity when chewing, or drainage near the tooth. Some abscesses also cause facial swelling or fever.
An abscess won’t usually go away on its own. The infection needs to be treated, and the tooth may require a root canal or extraction depending on the situation.
