What Is a Dry Socket?

A dry socket happens when the protective blood clot that forms after a tooth extraction is lost too soon or doesn’t develop properly. Without that clot, the underlying bone and nerves are exposed, which can cause significant pain.

Dry sockets are more common after lower wisdom tooth extractions but can occur after other extractions as well.

The good news is that a dry socket is treatable. If your pain suddenly becomes much worse a few days after your extraction, give us a call. We’ll evaluate the area and provide treatment to help make you more comfortable.
