If we recommend that you need a root canal, you may be wondering what to expect. While root canals have a reputation for being uncomfortable, modern techniques and anesthesia have made the procedure similar to getting a routine filling. In fact, a root canal is designed to relieve pain instead of causing it.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

When you come in for a root canal, the procedure will start by numbing the affected tooth and the surrounding area, so you stay comfortable throughout your visit. After the area is numb, we will place a protective dental dam around the tooth to keep it clean and dry.

Next, we will make a small opening in the top of the tooth to access the infected or damaged pulp inside. Using specialized instruments, we will carefully remove the infected tissue and thoroughly clean and disinfect the root canals. This step helps eliminate bacteria while preventing the infection from spreading.

After the canals have been cleaned, we will fill them with a material that seals the space and helps protect the tooth from future infection. In many cases, we will place a temporary filling on the tooth until we can complete a permanent restoration.

Because a tooth that has had a root canal can become more brittle over time, many patients receive a custom dental crown to restore its strength and function. The crown protects the tooth, so you can chew comfortably while feeling confident it blends in naturally with the rest of your smile.
