What are Composite Resin Fillings and How Do They Work?

If you’ve had cavities filled in the last 15 years, it is likely that you received composite resin fillings. This filling is also known as a “tooth-colored filling”, which looks more natural compared to amalgam or gold fillings. Here are a few things you should know about composite resin fillings:

  •  They are chemically bonded to your teeth. In addition to the cosmetic advantages of blending in with your tooth color, composite resin fillings bond to the tooth structure. This provides extra strength and support to your smile.

  • They can be used for other dental issues. Composite resin fillings are mainly used to fill in a cavity caused from tooth decay, but they can also be used to repair other problems. This includes filling in a chipped or broken tooth and providing additional strength to worn teeth.
  • They don’t last forever. Compared to metal fillings, composite fillings are not quite as durable due to their material. However, your dentist will be able to inspect them during your 6-month checkup and they can let you know how they are holding up. Because they aren’t as durable, you may be more likely to have more visits to your dentist due to chipping or wear and tear. However, many people take this tradeoff to eliminate having metal in their mouth.

If you need a filling or want to get rid of your previous metal fillings, we can help! Here at Dental Oasis of Clayton, we are committed to making sure our patients receive excellent dental care. Give us a call today!
